Are you passionate about the environment? Are you discouraged by the lack of action in Congress when it comes to reducing carbon emissions, regulating corporate polluters or protecting our natural resources? Do you wish you could do more to convince skeptics that climate change is real and dangerous for our future? Climate Reality Leadership Corp Training may be right for you. The training helps new leaders to propel the movement to dramatically curb climate change. The need has never been greater. But neither has the opportunity to make an impact.
Climate Reality Project is now accepting applications for Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training, which will take place in Houston, Texas on August 16, 17 and 18, 2016. The intensive three-day educational event features workshop sessions and seminars with renowned global climate leaders and former Vice President Al Gore. The training in Texas aims to empower new climate leaders to confront the climate crisis currently impacting the Lone Star State, which has seen more than its fair share of climate-related disasters.
Average temperatures in Texas have increased over the past five decades thanks to rising greenhouse gas emissions, and these rising temperatures have contributed to more intense floods, droughts, and heat waves. Since 1980, Texas has experienced 75 floods, droughts and other weather catastrophes, each of which produced at least $1 billion in losses (across Texas and neighboring states each event impacted). That’s more than any other US state.
Scientists predict more frequent and intense droughts, heat waves, and heavy downpours in the years ahead if we don’t take action. Unfortunately, the lobby of deniers is powerful despite the overwhelming evidence that climate change is real currently headlining the news. Planners at the Climate Reality Project say, “The good news is that we already have the affordable clean energy tools we need to end this crisis. What we need is for our leaders to act.”
This is where Climate Reality Leadership Corps comes in.
I was privileged to be nominated as a featured trainee at Climate Reality Project’s 2014 Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training in Johannesburg, South Africa. As an environmental journalist and editor in the sustainability sector, it’s my job to fully understand the implications of a warming planet. What I didn’t realize before hand was just how much I didn’t know. I found the training to be incredibly valuable on so many levels. First and foremost, provided me with a factual knowledge base that has been useful on a daily basis ever since. Even more importantly, being a member of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps lends credibility and authority to my work as a journalist covering climate change.
For three full days and nights, my fellow trainees and I lived and breathed climate change. Climate Reality’s chairman, former Vice President Al Gore was joined by nearly a dozen speakers leading the sessions, which included a variety of talks, workshops, field trips and seminars. The speakers were not just excellent teachers; they are living examples of how each of us has the power to be a catalyst for change. It was incredibly rewarding to interact with others who are as passionate about the issue of climate change as I am. No doubt, some life-long friendships and fruitful alliances were forged.
The training is ideal for anyone motivated to engender change through legislative action, media or grass-roots movements. It’s also valuable for educators, business owners, policy makers or others who need to fully understand the reality of our climate crisis. Whatever your reasons, as a newly minted Climate Reality Leader, you will be joining a network of people working both independently and together to shape the future.
I was personally moved and inspired by the entire experience. I highly recommend that anyone interested in joining the movement applying for the Climate Reality Leadership Training.
“As a Climate Reality Leader, you’ll join thousands of other trained Leaders from over 100 countries working to end climate change and ensure a healthy future for all generations. Your journey starts at the Houston training where former US Vice President Al Gore and some of the world’s brightest climate scientists, communicators, and story-tellers will explore how you can share the truth about climate change in personal and dynamic ways that inspire audiences everywhere. You’ll also learn practical social media, organizing, and public-speaking tips that will help you make a real difference in fighting climate change every day.” ~ Climate Reality Project
